Sandra holds a PhD in Environmental Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, where her research focused on biorefineries in the agro-industrial sector. She also holds an MSc in Bioenergy from KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden) and Aalto University (Finland), and a BSc in Energy Engineering from the University of Vigo. With a strong academic profile and solid technical knowledge, she helps translate innovative ideas into practical solutions. She has a strong interest in the Water-Energy-Food Nexus, sustainable development, and the circular bioeconomy. Digital transformation and generational renewal in agriculture are closely connected. When we think about the digitalisation of farming, drones flying over fields, robots harvesting lettuce or algorithms optimising irrigation immediately spring to mind. Yet the change goes far beyond adopting new tools: it raises the question of how to make rural areas more resilient, competitive and attractive to younger generations.

Against a backdrop of climate change, pressure on natural resources and an ageing agricultural sector, digitalisation offers an opportunity to modernise farms, optimise resources and open up new business models linked to innovation, sustainability and the data economy.

How digital transformation can support generational renewal

One of the major challenges facing European agriculture is generational renewal. The shortage of young professionals threatens the continuity of many farms, particularly in rural areas affected by depopulation.

Digitalisation can help change how the sector is perceived. The adoption of technologies such as precision agriculture, automation, artificial intelligence and smart monitoring systems is transforming the sector and creating professional roles linked to technology, data, sustainability and efficient resource management.

Agriculture is no longer understood solely as physical work in the field. It is also a space for innovation where agronomic knowledge, technology and entrepreneurship come together.

Attracting younger generations also means showing that agriculture is a space for innovation, knowledge and entrepreneurship.

New business opportunities in rural areas

Digital transformation is driving new business models across the agrifood sector. From farm management platforms to solutions for traceability, sensor-based monitoring, water optimisation and data analysis, a growing number of technology initiatives are seeking to address the sector’s challenges.

This ecosystem creates opportunities not only for farmers and cooperatives, but also for start-ups, technology centres and innovative companies capable of developing solutions tailored to the real needs of each area.

Digitalisation can also help improve farm profitability, optimise the use of resources and strengthen the capacity to adapt to extreme weather events.

Innovation rooted in local realities

Technology alone, however, does not guarantee the transformation of the sector. A recent study by the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) highlights the importance of developing solutions that genuinely reflect farming realities. Mistrust of certain digital tools is often not a rejection of change, but a response to the perception that technologies do not always account for the real needs of farmers and farms.

Transformation depends not only on adopting more technology, but on making it useful, accessible and responsive to local realities.

Collaboration for useful and accessible digitalisation

Collaboration between farmers, businesses, public authorities and innovation centres will be essential to advance digitalisation that is useful, accessible and connected to local needs.

The future of agriculture will depend not only on adopting more technology, but on directing innovation towards creating opportunities, attracting talent and building more sustainable and resilient rural areas.
