EU Missions in a nutshell

Specifically, the European Commission targets 5 specific areas through 5 different missions:

1. Adaptation to climate change: support at least 150 European regions and communities to become resilient to climate change by 2030.
2. Cancer: working with Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan to improve the lives of more than 3 million people by 2030 through prevention, cure, and solutions to live longer and better.
3. Restore our ocean and waters by 2030.
4. Have 100 smart, climate-neutral cities by 2030.
5. Move forward a Soil Deal for Europe, focused on creating 100 “living laboratories” and “lighthouses” to lead the transition to healthy soils by 2030.

1. EU missions belong to the Horizon Europe Pillar 2: Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness.
2. EU missions do not have a fixed duration, but it is expected that target results are achieved by 2030.
3. EU missions do not have a fixed budget. That said, there is a limitation that says that during the first 3 years of Horizon Europe, a maximum of 10% of the annual budget of Pillar II can be programmed through calls to implement EU missions.
4. The first version of the work programme for the EU missions is already published (link). However, a new version is expected before the end of 2021 with the calls for 2022.
5. The implementation plan for each of the EU missions has recently been published (link), detailing both the operational objectives for each mission and the main activities to be developed under each operational objective.
